Link baiting (or linkbait) is the one of the latest techniques taking the web community by storm and has come to be the preferred way to natural link building. Essentially it attracts a lot of visitors.

A classic example of link bait was the Subservient Chicken web site by Burger King. So many people ended up talking about that web site, and many linked to it with about 29,300 links according to Yahoo!, and ranked number one on Google for the word chicken. By creating something on your web site that's funny, controversial, informative, or creative, it will gain natural links which is the key to top search engine rankings.
It means to create something that naturally attract backlinks for your web page by getting people to talk about it, discussing it on forums, blogging about i, posting it on del.icio.us/Furl/Digg/Shoutwire and linking to it from their sites.

In order to bait a link, you need a hook. There are a number of alternatives and depend on your type of business, some of the more popular include News, Contrary , Attack, Resource or Humour.

- Provide something of value ... for free
- Build a useful tool
- Write an interesting article
- Test new ideas
- Be the first in doing something on the internet
- Write something controversial
- Write late breaking news
- Be the first to expose unscrupulous behaviour
- Interview a well known person and publish it
- Be contraversial about someone or something
- Write something funny
- Be the first to research and document something
- Create a theme, skin or something graphical
- Produce an interesting photograph or picture
- Develop a tool that others can put on their sites, that links to you
- Post a joke about a famous person
- Run a newsworthy event like a competition
- Make a resource that is just in time for a major event
- Write an outrageous theory and back it up with logic
- Write useful comments on an current event
- Create a new buzz word in your field and get people to talk about it
